Q&A with Elizabeth Newman Interior Design September 10 2020

We love working with interior designers in the Charleston community! Elizabeth Newman's beautiful work is an inspiration to us at A Simple Tree Personal Framing. We have worked with Elizabeth on a variety of projects including framing artwork as well as creating custom mirrors for her residential design projects!

Tell us about yourself!

I am an interior designer based on the Isle of Palms,  I have been doing design in Charleston for almost 20 years after receiving a degree in architecture design at Clemson.  I love living on IOP with my husband, Dave, daughter, Zoey and dog, Sunny :)

Tell us about your business!

I have a small interior design business and do work all over the Charleston area.   I focus on residential design and work personally with each client.   I also enjoy doing kitchen and bath design.

What was the initial idea that led to starting your business?

I worked with Kathleen Rivers Interior Design for 10 years and she was such an amazing mentor.  I then opened my design studio in 2008.  I love being hands on in every aspect of the business.

What is the biggest challenge of owning your business?

I am always learning!!!

What is the biggest reward of owning your business?

Clients!  I am so lucky to have wonderful clients who become repeat clients and become close friends.

What inspires you?

Everything beautiful!  Fabrics, antique pieces, people, the beach, etc…

How do you manage it all?

Life is crazy so I try to be as organized as possible.

Who are your favorite interior designers?

Tom Scheerer, Miles Redd, and Amanda Lindroth

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

Classic, livable, colorful and fresh…

What is your favorite design trend?

I love rattan and love that it is so classic and timeless but it just so happens to be a trend at the moment.

What is your least favorite design trend?

The color gray.

What is the best tip you can give when it comes to designing a space?

Use pieces that are meaningful and reflect the personality and lifestyle of the client.  Clients should love everything in their home.

What do you love about working in the Charleston community?

The people in the design community are amazing and the quality of houses that I have had the chance to design are also amazing!

What projects stick out to you?

Last year I did a new construction house on Sullivan’s Island for a very special and long time client.  I was involved from the very beginning with the architect so I had a hand in selecting and designing every detail.  Although a new house, we strived to use many characteristics of an “old beach house”.  A Simple Tree framed much of the artwork and created mirrors for some of the bathrooms.

Why do you find working with a personal framer to be beneficial?

A Simple Tree takes the time to work with me and help select the best frame for each piece.  Their knowledge and expertise is key!

Any new exciting projects coming up?

Lots in the works!!
